SUMMARY:The Story of the Book in Goa - Online Talk
DESCRIPTION:EVENT:\nThe Story of the Book in Goa:\nFrom the 16th Century to the Present times \nSPEAKER:\nFrederick Noronha \nDATE:\nThursday\, 18th February\, 2021 \nTIME:\n6:00 pm IST (Indian Standard Time. Goa)\n7:30 am EST (Eastern Standard Time. Toronto) \nCOST:\nFree \nLocation:\nOnline via Zoom.\nLink: http://bitly.ws/bEdr\nMeeting ID: 946-1036-2416 \nSYNOPSYS:\nGoa\, India\, was home to the first-ever Gutenberg-style printing press in Asia. But\, over the centuries\, Goa seems to have lost track of the work that had been done\, and has been producing few books itself. \nAsia’s first press reached here accidentally in 1556\, via the Jesuits. This does not imply that the press played only a religious role. So\, what was its impact of the early presses at Old Goa\, Margao and Rachol? \nIn what way did this influence Goan writing of the twentieth-century? Can the book be a tool to understand the complex history of Goa\, its relationship with the outside world\, and the region’s significant but little-understood diaspora? \nYou might be surprised by what emerges from the story of the book in Goa…. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nFrederick Noronha is a journalist\, photographer\, book publisher and Wikipedian. Between 2013 and 2020 he undertook his doctoral research at the Goa University’s Department of English on publishing in twentieth-century Goa. Noronha’s publishing venture\, Goa1556\, has published over 150 titles during its 13 years of operation. \nFOLLOW THE SERIES on YOUTUBE:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyOl-bLEtvA9-A7LEhb0Ivw/videos
